Concrete Design

Concrete As A Structural Component

Concrete design accounts for many structural elements we see today, whether it is bridge, dam, highrise building, car park or houses. Its ability to be formed to any shape and its high compressive strength are the reason why it is a very popular choice of material.

Fire resistance

Other advantages of concrete include fire resistance. This particular property is important if located in an area prone to bush fire. A well designed concrete wall can act as a barrier to stop the fire from travelling further into other parts of the building. Its resistance means that a concrete element maintains its integrity when there is a fire present, unlike steel which weakens under extreme heat.

Acoustics and Insulations

Concrete performs very well at insulating sound. It also absorbs heat very well due to its high Thermal Mass. This means that your building can be more energy efficient during winter, as the concrete absorbs the heat during day time, and releases it slowly at night. This property makes it an excellent material choice for industrial applications such as cooling towers at power plants.

What to look out for

As wonderful as concrete is, a few factors need to be considered before you decide to select a concrete design for your structure.

Concrete has the tendency to crack if not reinforced properly. Cracks weaken the structural strength and reduce the aesthetic value in your building. Moreover, concrete’s quality is very dependent on the builder’s workmanship. Poor workmanship can cause spalling and honeycombing on the concrete element, exposing the reinforcement to corrosion and reducing its strength.
