Bearing Capacity Analysis

What is Bearing Capacity Analysis?

A Bearing Capacity Analysis will determine the soil’s ability to resist any load imposed upon it by the structure’s foundation and consequently assist the engineer to design the correct foundations for the structure. This analysis is performed to gain an understanding of the soil properties of the land in order to minimise and prevent any ground settlements from occurring.

Why is a Bearing Capacity Analysis required?

A Bearing Capacity Analysis is required to determine the soil properties of the land, which help predicting the settlements that may happen in the future and what type of foundation is most appropriate.

If the soil near the surface has adequate bearing capacity to support the structures loads, then spread foundations, such as footings or rafts can be used. However, if the soil strength is insufficient at the surface, then deep foundations will be required such as piers or piles to transmit the forces down to deeper, more stable soil.
